Katherine Moran is an Associate Professor of American Studies at Saint Louis University. Her book, The Imperial Church: Catholic Founding Fathers and United States Empire (Cornell University Press, 2020), examines the role of religion in the rhetoric of U.S. empire in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Her current book project, California Magdalens: Catholicism, the State, and the History of Women’s Incarceration, 1850- 1940 is a globally-situated history of the Magdalen Asylum of San Francisco, California, a religiously-run institution that also served as state-sponsored industrial school for girls convicted by the courts of "unruly" behavior.
