Can Governments Help Grow the Gaming Community?
One of the fundamental principles of diplomacy is the importance of going to where the audience is located, including popular cultural platforms they enjoy. As societies today are increasingly drawn to technologies and non-traditional influencers, the State Department is leading innovative ways to reach some of the 2.7 billion gamers globally. My task: Should governments continue to conduct outreach through video games? If that answer was yes, then why and how best to do so.

Do No Harm: Ethically Designing Emotionally Heavy Games
There is no topic games can't tackle, but when game content intentionally evokes intense emotional experiences game developers have a duty to minimize harm. Whether a game explores vulnerable populations or discusses topics traditionally considered stigmatized (i.e. mental illness) or traumatic (i.e. assault), game designers must actively do right by the player. In this talk, clinical psychologist and professor of game design Dr. Kelli Dunlap adapts psychological ethical standards to create guidelines for game designers working on emotionally heavy content.

Well-Played / Raising Good Gamers: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at 3 Families’ Experience in Minecraft
During the Covid-19 pandemic, many children have had limited real-world access to playtime with other kids. Online games like Minecraft have filled the gap as digital communal playground spaces. Here kids are continuing their social development and establishing their early identities as gamers and peers, learning to navigate online norms and cultures. Parents are finding the balance between supporting autonomy and providing adult guidance. In the first part of this session, game designer Sabrina Culyba will share clips and stories from a year of Minecraft with her 7 year old daughter and her friends (ages 9 and 10), with commentary from both kids and parents about their gaming life on a Minecraft server. The presentation will be followed by a live panel with the families, moderated by Katie Salen Tekinbaş, discussing what it means to raise good gamers in 2021.

Psychedelics as Therapeutics: The Contribution of Game Heuristics
No longer are psychedelics the exclusive domain of the counterculture; they are now accepted as an important part of a new generation of therapeutic approaches used to treat depression, anxiety, pain, addiction, PTSD, and other mental health disorders. These disorders have been difficult to treat effectively – until now. Psilocybin, MDMA, and Ketamine have demonstrated significant clinical efficacy in treating disorders that affect thousands of people.

These next-generation neuro-therapeutics are most effective when used in combination with cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques. Methods of establishing mood, mindset, and setting pioneered by game developers are now serving as a powerful complement to psychedelic therapies, especially when used in combination with wearable biosensors.

This panel will bring together experts in psychedelic research, finance, game development, and virtual reality therapeutic systems to discuss the impending advancement of these critical therapeutic advances.
